Holy Orders

“Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ to his apostles continues to be exercised in the Church until the end of time: thus it is the sacrament of apostolic ministry. It includes three degrees: episcopate, presbyterate, and diaconate” (CCC, 1536).

The episcopate is made up of bishops, those who have care of multiple congregations and the task of appointing and ordaining priests and deacons. The presbyterate is made up of priests, who share in the work of the bishop. They are responsible for teaching, governing, and celebrating the sacraments in a given community. Deacons (diaconate) have the task of overseeing various church functions, such as works of mercy and certain liturgical roles.
