Many parishes hold communal penance services at different points in the year, especially during Advent and Lent. The liturgy combines public prayer and individual confession of sins to a priest. The service includes a Scripture reading and brief exhortation to repentance, followed by an examination of conscience. Then those present individually confess their sins to a priest, making an act of contrition, and receive absolution, and a penance.
