Mind & Body Wellness Resources for SF/East Bay

The apostle James wrote in his letter: “Are there any sick people among you? Let them send for the priests of the Church, let them pray over them anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick persons and if they have committed any sins, their sins will be forgiven them (James 5:14-16).”

James’ words introduce the rite for the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. They let us know that from earliest times the Church was concerned for the whole person, not just the spiritual. In modern times this care has extended also to people’s psychological wellbeing. We recognize the three elements of the whole person: spiritual, physical and emotional, must be treated together. This resource emphasizes human emotional needs as part of the whole person to compliment one’s spiritual and physical health.

Wellness and health can be thought of as standing on three pillars: mental/emotional health, physical health and spiritual health. While the church endeavors to provide the support and direction necessary for a rich and fulfilling spiritual life, as individuals we can sometimes neglect the other pillars (mind and body) and find ourselves suffering without knowing how to feel whole and healthy.

These resources were created to provide a sampling of community resources in the Berkeley/East Bay area that address some of the many issues related to mental-emotional and physical health.
